Driving in unseasonably warm and mixed weather

The state of Iowa has experienced unseasonably warm and mixed weather this winter. Fog covered most of the state over the weekend, and it was a reminder how it affects driving.

Driving in the fog is much like driving blind, and it’s important to remember these rules:

  • Avoid high beam lights in foggy conditions
  • Allow plenty of time to reach your destination as with any inclement weather
  • Keep focused on the road
  • Drive slow and cautious
  • Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you

Some parts of the state experienced flooding. The amount of rain has even caused Make-A-Wish’s annual Jolly Holiday lights to shut down the rest of the season. One thing to remember is to prevent hydroplaning your vehicle. If you have ever hydroplaned your vehicle, you’ll know it’s scary. Here’s what you need to know about hydroplaning:

  • It can happen at speeds as little as 35 miles per hour
  • Like slipping on ice, do not try and turn the wheel when hydroplaning. This may cause you to veer off the road.

Whether you’re enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, or waiting for the winter’s snow to make its way back, being cautious and cutting distractions should be a priority when driving.
