Aggressive Drivers Peak During the Holiday Season

By Beattie Law Firm of Beattie Law Firm, P.C. posted in Personal Injury on Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

The attorneys at the Beattie Law Firm know that during the holidays it is a dangerous time to be on the road, with the week of Thanksgiving being one of the most fatal. Now that Thanksgiving has passed, don’t think you are completely safe from an accident.

Last minute shopping and travel make it very stressful for many; and with the stress, comes the risk for more accidents and injuries due to aggressive drivers.

The Washington Post recently published disturbing data that shows how holiday stress relates to aggressive motorists.

  • Approximately one-third of drivers indicate that they become more aggressive driving on the roads due to holiday stress
  • State Farm Insurance found that 32 percent of drivers, who are parents and drivers under the age of 49, were more likely to show signs of aggression or road rage during the holidays.
  • The Highway Loss Data Institute reported that claims for collisions increase by almost 20 percent in December.
  • A 10-year analysis of crash data in Alabama showed the six days around Christmas registered 18 percent more accidents than Thanksgiving — the heaviest travel period of the year — and New Year’s Eve — where the number of impaired motorists is at a peak.

Due to Thanksgiving falling late this year, there are fewer days to shop, which could result in more congestion at shopping centers and malls, but also an increase in stressed shoppers.

With the increased number of motorists on the road, it is important to remember to take your time when planning your trip. Don’t be the aggressive driver, and stay calm. Weather conditions may also increase your stress and of others on the road.

Enjoy the comforts and joys that the holidays bring. However; if you become a victim of a vehicular accident, know that reaching out to the Beattie Law Firm only takes one call.
