2015 Grain Bin Deaths in Iowa

A grain bin is an agricultural structure used in farming to store bulk materials, such as grain, corn, coal, or sawdust. Grain bins, if improperly equipped with safety devices, have the potential to be extremely dangerous.

In 2014, there were 28 documented grain entrapments – four of which were in Iowa – which resulted in 17 deaths. Iowa is one of two states with the highest number of documented grain entrapment incidents according to Purdue University.

At the end of 2015, tragedy struck two Iowans in separate grain bin incidents.

Eric Reasland of Creston died on December 17 after being trapped in a grain bin for about 3.5 hours. Reasland was working to break up crust that formed on the grain bin’s soybeans

On December 29, in Keystone, Iowa, Alan Keith Kimm died after becoming trapped while vacuuming grain into a semi. Authorities believe a wall of corn surrounded Kimm and collapsed, covering him.
