An Iowa man’s ticketing story went viral early last week when he refused to pull over while taking his pregnant wife to the hospital. The man caught law enforcement’s attention going 30 mph over the speed limit. Because he refused to stop, the officer disabled the car’s tires with blow-sticks. The couple was held at gunpoint until officers assessed the situation and determined that the wife was in an emergency condition.

The man now faces two citations: a speeding ticket for going 86 in a 55 miles-per-hour zone, in addition to failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. In situations like these cooperation is key. Had he initially pulled over, the officer would have been able to assess the situation quickly and provide the couple with an escort to the hospital.

Another incident this weekend took a tragic turn when a young Des Moines woman was involved in a fatal hit-and-run. While police have ruled out speed and drug and alcohol impairment, Iowa law states that an individual must stay at the scene of an accident should it result in bigger injuries or damages. The young woman is now charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and lack of insurance. Police say that if she stayed at the scene, she probably would not have been arrested, but rather ticketed.
